today’s special(s): portishead essential mix, 1995

Many thanks to the friend who sent me the link for this, Portishead’s epic BBC Radio1 Essential Mix from 1995, earlier today. It was the perfect antidote for a damp and grey morning and unearthed some really lovely tunes. My faves from the mix:

Craig Mack – Flava In Ya Ear
Makes me feel like a teenager again.

Massive Attack – Karmacoma (Portishead Experience)
I always preferred this version, and used to listen to it repeatedly on one of the Rebirth of Cool CDs, the one that also had tracks from Jhelisa and Bomb The Bass and Ben Harper and Paul Weller… what ever happened to that series? It was SO good!

Stevie Wonder – Light My Fire
I’d never heard this version before, but am very glad it’s in my life now.

>>review<< massive attack – heligoland

The overwhelming feeling listening to this album for the first time, was one of relief. A mature and welcome return to form for the Massives, and hooray for the Return of Daddy G! Hooray for Martine Topley-Bird fronting not one but two tracks. HOORAY for Massive Attack meets TVOTR!
